Exhibition JANE JIN KAISEN : Of Specters or Returns
JANE JIN KAISEN
Of Specters or Returns
First solo exhibition in France
Spanning the mediums of video installation, narrative experimental film, photographic installation, performance, and text, Jane Jin Kaisen’s artistic practice is informed by extensive interdisciplinary research and engagement with diverse communities. She is known for her visually striking, multilayered, performative, poetic, and multi-voiced feminist works through which past and present are brought into relation.
Born in Korea and adopted by a family in Denmark, Kaisen's work intertwines individual and collective, personal and political histories, while engaging topics such as memory, migration, borders, and translation. She activates the field where lived experience and embodied knowledge intersect with larger political histories. Her works negotiate and mediate the means of representation, resistance, and reconciliation, thus forming alternative genealogies and sites of collective emergence.
Convened by French born, Brussels based curator and writer Yann Chateigné Tytelman, Of Specters or Returns at Le Bicolore is Kaisen's first solo exhibition in France. Relying on the large scale installation of the same name – a work dealing with coloniality, borders and migration, dated 2020 –, it immerse the viewer into an haunting, yet silent, moving display of objects collected between lands that are structuring the artist's historical, sociopolitical research and personal, intimate territories. The exhibition articulates this major installation with other pieces which address, in various ways, the issues of invisible histories and cultural division, forms of healing and the politics of translation
